Firefighters are required to attend mandatory training classes each month. Personnel also participate in additional training such as Kansas University Fire & Rescue Institute, Labette Community College Fire School, state and regional schools, and the National Fire Academy.

The department is one of the best trained in the state. On staff are 13 emergency medical technicians, five hazardous material technicians, and four certified fire investigators. All 18 firefighters are certified Firefighter I, Firefighter II, and Driver/Operator through Kansas University.
